Eid al-Fitr traditions

On takbiran night, the streets in villages and cities are filled with the sound of takbir echoing from mosques and prayer rooms. Children and teenagers usually join a torchlight parade around the village while chanting takbir, carrying lanterns or traditional musical instruments. This activity is one of the most awaited moments because it is full of joy and togetherness between residents.

Every year, it always brings a warm and togetherness nuance. After a full month of fasting, the people of Kuningan welcome Eid al-Fitr with great joy. Since morning, takbir echoes from mosques, and the streets begin to be crowded with residents preparing to perform Eid prayers in open fields or large mosques.

After Eid prayers, the "sungkeman" tradition becomes an important moment in every family. Children and younger family members kneel before their parents to apologize for any mistakes. Usually, after sungkeman, children are given pocket money or angpau as a symbol of happiness and blessings.

A typical tradition that is never missed is the "touring gathering". Kuningan residents will visit the homes of relatives, neighbors and even old friends. During this visit, they forgave each other while enjoying typical Eid dishes such as ketupat, opor ayam, rendang, and traditional cakes such as sagon and rengginang.

Eid is also a gathering moment for migrants returning home. The village atmosphere was busier than usual. The small street, which is usually quiet, is filled with vehicles and the joyful laughter of children playing. This is a rare moment where the entire extended family can gather completely.

Not to be missed, many residents make pilgrimages to ancestral graves. This activity is usually done after the Eid prayer or the next day. They clean the graves, scatter flowers, and pray as a form of respect for their loved ones who have passed away.

Eid is not just about food and new clothes, but about maintaining friendship, respecting traditions, and strengthening the bonds of brotherhood. The religious atmosphere mixed with local wisdom makes Eid in this area always feel special and unforgettable.
